Plastic Bags in Kenya

On Monday 28 August, the Kenyan Government banned plastic bags from the country. This means that any carrier bags, including duty free bags in their luggage, cannot now be taken into any part of Kenya.

The Kenyan government has imposed fines of up to US$40,000 to enforce the new law.

All visitors to Kenya are advised to use paper bags or bags made out of fabric and refrain from using plastic bags at all.  Should businesses in Kenya offer plastic bags, these should be refused. There is an exception for duty free purchases when leaving Kenya, after central security in the airport.
