The Turkish government announced a ‘State of Emergency’ on 20 July. What does this mean?

The government has not detailed what this will mean in practice, however previous experience suggests that it is likely to focus on the cities that have been affected by disturbances in recent days – in this case Ankara and Istanbul – and may place restrictions on large gatherings and increase powers of arrest.

There has been no change to Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice regarding travel to Turkey and the latest update is clear that the coastal resorts are not significantly affected. Certainly, everything that we hear from our people on the ground suggests that the resorts are calm and that guests continue to enjoy their holidays.
